I wonder how many of you are familiar with Iris Apfel?
You may have seen her on Social Media without knowing her name. She’s a 94 year old fashion icon, recognisable for her large round glasses and eccentric and unapologetically flamboyant style.
Now, please don’t misinterpret my reference to the fabulous Iris, as a suggestion that we all become nonconformists to fashion expectations and go rogue. What I am suggesting though, is now that we are all ‘grownups’, we take commercial fashion trends with a grain of salt, and embrace our individual style, popular opinion be damned.
By now, we know our own styles, or should do. For example, how would you describe yours? Classic? Avante-Gard? Colourful? Elegant? Once you identify that, you can inject a splash of the latest trend, be it a colour or a style or maybe even a length.
It’s great to be able to stay current without losing your own individual fashion identity. Try mixing current fashion items with classic pieces from your existing wardrobe. This is not only a more authentic way to embrace fashion but it’s also got the added benefit of being a more sustainable approach to an increasingly fast fashion environment.
Above all, as women over 40, we know what works for our lifestlyes and our bodies. So my advice, for what it’s worth, Be comfortable, be confident and be brave, experiment and have fun.
